3rd Street Pedestrian Corridor Design Concepts

02 Nov 2009

by: Jim Johnson

The Third Street Pedestrian Corridor has been in the Project Plan of the Downtown TIF since the TIF’s inception in 1998.  The TIF Project Plan is part of a larger public planning process—the Downtown Strategic Action Plan (SAP)—supporting the revitalization of Downtown Fort Worth.  Among the SAP’s guiding objectives are establishing a residential community, expanding day/night activity areas and building on the current successful retail core and entertainment district.  Other objectives within the SAP are maintaining and expanding a pedestrian-friendly street level environment, improving gateways to downtown and strengthening pedestrian corridors and linkages.

Third street was identified in the 1993 and 2003 Downtown Strategic Action Plans as one of the priority corridors for implementation of pedestrian-friendly gateways and the extension of walkable areas to the outer edge of Downtown.  Third street connects the major residential areas west of Henderson Street and east of the UPRR railroad tracks to Sundance Square and the heart of the Central Business District.

In May of 2008, the City of Fort Worth and the Downtown TIF issued an RFQ for landscape architectural services for streetscape improvements along the Third street corridor in downtown.  HOK was subsequently selected for the project and was given notice to proceed in August 2009.

Since then HOK and Downtown Fort Worth, Inc. have worked with downtown stakeholders to develop an overall urban design framework, four streetscape concepts and cost estimates for future improvements to the Third Street Corridor.  Two public meetings have been held to guide the process and solicit public input.  Below is a brief presentation of the planning process and current concepts.

The next public meeting is scheduled for November 19th at the Fort Worth Central Library, with final design schemes to be presented.
