General Worth Square
Find relief from the Texas sun and learn more about JFK's visit to Fort Worth.
Named for General William Jenkins Worth, Fort Worth's namesake, General Worth Square is a 1.5 acre park located just north of the Fort Worth Convention Center arena. The park straddles Main Street between 8th and 9th Streets. This park's size and location offers great possibility for active use year-round by downtown employees, residents, visitors, conventioneers and event planners.
General Worth Square is built above a parking garage and has terraced steps leading up to shady areas below large oak trees. The park is used for downtown events, and will soon be undergoing improvements including new lighting, repairs to brick work, irrigation and new seating. This work will be done in coordination with the installation of a new John F. Kennedy Tribute planned by the spring of 2012. The JFK Tribute will be sited approximately where President Kennedy delivered his impromptu outdoor address during his visit to Fort Worth on the morning of November 22, 1963. The Tribute will include an 8 foot bronze, created by National Sculpture Society Fellow Lawrence Ludtke. The sculpture is complete and is located at the Shidoni Foundry in Santa Fe, awaiting installation in Fort Worth. It will be placed at the center of a circular plaza. Behind the sculpture will stand a wall with larger than life photos depicting the President’s visit in Fort Worth and an exhibit describing the events of that morning. This will be a major enhancement in downtown public art. Learn more at our projects page.
The park also includes the Aviation Wall of Honor, which commemorates Fort Worth individuals and organizations that have been directly involved in aviation. Learn more about the Aviation Wall of Honor and the JFK Tribute at www.jfktribute.com.
