1st to 3rd Street Pedestrian Improvements

August 10,2017

Pedestrian improvements including sidewalks, ramps, pedestrian lighting, landscaping, and bridge improvements are underway to enhance access from 1st Street to 3rd Street.

First Street was closed in 2014, as part of the Tower 55 at-grade improvements to relieve congestion at one of the nation's busiest railroad crossings.  Tower 55 is located at the junction of the Union Pacific and BNSF lines, roughly at the intersection of I-30 and I-35.  In addition to adding track, sidings, upgrades to bridges and other infrastructure, the $103 million project closed four street crossings, including 1st Street.

DFWI, downtown stakeholders, BNSF, and the City of Fort Worth developed a mitigation strategy for the closure of 1st Street.  DFWI and the City of Fort Worth received $750,000 from BNSF to design and construct pedestrian improvements.

DFWI contracted with the Fain Group and construction will take approximately 150 days beginning on or around September 22, 2017. Infrequent detours may be expected during the under-bridge work period.
