As you sit and snack on ceviche while sipping on a corn old-fashioned in a cave-like setting, you may feel as though you are vacationing on the gulf in Mexico. But there’s no need to fly to our North American neighbor. This dining experience is available at Beverly’s Downtown, a modern Mexican restaurant that will open next week in the basement of the historic Hogan Building in downtown Fort Worth. Guests will walk into what looks like an underground cave with dim, moody lighting and arched, natural-looking architecture — a different vibe from the iconic 1930s art deco exterior of the 901 Houston St. building. This is the first Mexican concept for Jeff Payne and Jason Cross, owners of the 43-year-old Cousins BBQ and The Mont, which opened last year. Their hospitality company, Around the Fire Hospitality, now consists of Beverly’s and The Mont, manned by culinary director Michael Arlt, who has worked in Florida, Maine, Chicago and Houston. Before The Mont, he worked as culinary director at The Beast and Company, a now-closed fine-dining restaurant on Magnolia.
The menu aims to honor the cultural and geographical diversity of Mexico from the rich meats and earthy spices of the North, to Gulf and Caribbean influences, according to a press release. The real meat and potatoes include a pork presa, which is a tender and well-marbled cut of pork; steak; and dry-aged duck. There’s also a shareable entree of wagyu skirt steak with green chorizo, blue shrimp, veggies and tortillas. Creativity really shines through the cocktails with a Gran Maizal corn whiskey old-fashioned made with corn simple syrup. A dirty “margtini” is exactly what it sounds like: a margarita with olive brine to make it dirty. And the smoke on the verde features mezcal with salsa verde and a lime-salt foam. Beverly’s lounge offers a more casual experience with a taco menu and shareable bites. Grab a spicy piña con loca cocktail and indulge in skirt steak, fish or sweet potato tacos, tuna and beef tostadas or beef fat potatoes.
Beverly’s plans to open for dinner service on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Eventually, the restaurant will also serve brunch and lunch. Reservations can be made on Open Table. Beverly’s Downtown is located in the basement of 901 Houston St. in downtown Fort Worth. They are open Tuesday to Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday to Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. Hours will eventually expand.
