Color, music, and tradition will take over downtown Fort Worth this weekend as Sundance Square hosts its fourth annual Día de los Muertos Festival and Catrina Contest.

The free, family-friendly celebration will bring live performances, food trucks, fireworks and hundreds of vibrant Catrina costumes to the heart of the city.

The event honors Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican tradition celebrated each year on November 1 and 2 to remember and celebrate loved ones who have passed.

This year’s festival happens Saturday, Nov. 1, from noon to 10 p.m., transforming the Plaza into a lively showcase of art, culture, and community.

Here’s what to know about the event.

What makes the Sundance Square Día de los Muertos Festival special?

At the center of the festival is the Catrina Contest, a showcase of artistry and imagination.

Contestants transform into La Catrina, the skeletal figure that has become an enduring symbol of remembrance and Mexican identity.

Participants don’t simply dress up for competition. They bring La Catrina to life through vivid color, craft, and storytelling that reflect Fort Worth’s creativity and cultural pride.

What can guests expect throughout the day?

Families can look forward to a full day of music, performances, and food in Sundance Square Plaza.

Highlights include:

Mini Catrina Contest for children 12 and under at 2 p.m. on the Plaza Stage
Adult Catrina Costume Contest at 5 p.m.
Live music and dance performances throughout the day
More than 80 artisan vendors and food trucks serving favorites such as tacos de trompo, empanadas, arepas and churros

Cultural groups including Ballet Folklórico de Fort Worth, Mariachi Real De Alvarez, Havana NRG, Grupo Pakal, and Fusion Latina will take the stage, keeping the energy high through the evening.

The celebration will end with a fireworks show lighting up downtown Fort Worth. For more information, visit sundancesquare.com/events.
