When two YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth members met in a workout class, neither realized the impact they would have on one another. After learning that her fellow member had never learned to read, one member, a former teacher, offered to help. Today, the two meet up weekly at the Y to work on language skills and deepen their connection.
Stories like this reflect the everyday impact of the YMCA which creates opportunities that extend far beyond fitness. For decades, the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth has focused on empowering individuals to flourish both personally and collectively, guided by its core values of respect, responsibility, caring and honesty.
More Than Just a Gym
Joining the YMCA means gaining much more than a gym. Members become part of a vibrant community hub offering diverse programs and classes, from camps and certifications, designed to support their community.
A YMCA membership includes numerous programs and services at little to no cost. One of the most impactful services is their free childcare, which allows members to receive up to two hours of childcare each day while onsite. This service gives parents the flexibility to work out, read, decompress, or even apply for jobs, without worrying about securing childcare.
In addition to modern fitness facilities, the Y provides inviting community areas that encourage connections across generations. With a full calendar of events, including teen nights, parents night outs, drop-and-shop programs and community potlucks, members can easily form friendships. Older, active members also benefit from programming tailored to keep them engaged, social, and active.
The YMCA also works to teach their members useful life skills through pre-services programs. Offerings such as welding, culinary arts, financial literacy and fraud awareness help participants prepare for everyday challenges and career opportunities.
“We have hosted free classes where they can learn how not to get scammed. We essentially just try to teach people the pathway forward,” said Christy Jones, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer. “Those are the types of things I don’t believe people recognize that happen at a YMCA.”
Giving Back to the Community
Giving back is central to the YMCA’s mission. Through volunteer opportunities, members can make a tangible impact while supporting their neighbors. The Y accomplishes this through their teen mentoring program, partnerships with other local nonprofits and food pantries, and other outreach efforts that serve families across the region.
Start The Year Strong
The YMCA prides itself on being accessible and inclusive and works hard to reduce barriers to membership. For the month of January, the Y is running a “Pay the Day” promotion making it easier for individuals and families to join.
During January, new members can join by paying the same dollar amount as the day they sign up. Join the 1st for $1, the 2nd for $2, and so on until the end of the month. The earlier you join, the greater the savings.
Throughout the year, the Y also offers other financial assistance and payment options to reduce barriers to join. More information on these can be found here.
You Make It Possible
Whether you’re searching for a place to belong or looking for ways to support others, the YMCA offers countless opportunities to get involved. If you’re happy where you are, consider supporting the Y so its programs, scholarships, and services can continue to be accessible to current and future members.
Every gift helps strengthen the community, shape a brighter future, and ensure the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth can continue changing lives, one person at a time.
