A new sports grill brings hot chicken wings and NY pizza to Sundance Square

Chef Jon Bonnell’s popular TCU-area sports grill, Buffalo Bros, will open a second location next year on a busy Throckmorton Street corner in Sundance Square.
The new Buffalo Bros Sundance Square in the 89-year-old Sanger Building, 415 Throckmorton St., will serve hot chicken wings and tenders, pizzas and subs, plus daily specials in a sports setting with 40 TVs, Bonnell said.
It replaces In the Sack, a delivery and take-out food shop that briefly succeded a grocery and deli.
“It has lots of great windows and it’ll be a good place to watch a game,” Bonnell said.
“Downtown really hasn’t had a sports bar in a while. We’re going to have a place families can come, with a good price point.”
The restaurant is lined on two sides with department-store show windows. It was built in 1929 as a Sanger’s department store and later became a JCPenney before the upper floors were remodeled into the Sanger Lofts apartments.
A Sundance Square announcement gave the opening date only as “2019.”
The original Buffalo Bros opened at 3015 South University Drive 10 years ago. It has been named to local lists of “Best Wings” and “Best Sports Bars” and to a national list of “Best College Sports Bars.”
Buffalo Bros’ founder is Ed McOwen, a Bonnell business partner and Buffalo native familiar with that city’s tradition of red-hot wings in “Buffalo sauce.”
Wings and chicken tenders are served at a choice of seven heat levels from plain tohabanero-based “suicide.”
The menu has broadened to include weekday specials such as rigatoni, chicken enchiladas and Buffalo chicken soup.
On “Wing Wednesday,” wings are 10 for $5.
“That’s our biggest sales day every week,” Bonnell said.
The restaurant also serves “beef on Weck” shaved-beef sandwiches with horseradish and other New York sports-bar favorites.
Bonnell also owns Waters, a seafood restaurant at 301 Main St.
