Library Celebrates Fifth Season of 3rd Thursday Jazz Series
April 18,2014
The Fort Worth Library proudly presents its fifth annual 3rd Thursday Jazz Series. The performances are part of the library’s Jazz Preservation Project, which exists to preserve the rich musical heritage of North Texas and promote the arts. Past series have included pianists Benny Green and Fred Hersch, trombonist Robin Eubanks, bassists Kristin Korb and Paul Unger, and drummer Duane Durrett.
The free performances begin at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month beginning May 15 in the gallery of the Central Library, 500 W. 3rd St.
This year’s featured performer is New-Orleans-born, Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton who will be joined by bassist Braylon Lacy and drummer Adonis Rose.
Payton is widely considered one of the most accomplished musicians of our time. Hailed as a virtuoso before completing high school, his musicianship and compositional skills have assured him a place in music history.
“Payton's clarion trumpet, as well as his genre-defying solos, stand at the center of his music making,” said Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune. “Payton bends notes beyond recognition. No descriptive label or category can be affixed to Payton's solos, which are as brashly original as they are technically imposing.”
“Jazz and the blues have deep roots in Fort Worth,” said Library Director Gleniece Robinson, ”and it’s important to ensure these art forms and artists continue to thrive in our community.”
