Sundance Square’s Christmas Tree Goes Green...er

A 57-foot tree from Michigan now stands in downtown Fort Worth’s Sundance Square Plaza. The tree will be decorated all week, followed by the annual Christmas tree lighting on Saturday.

This year, the lights will all be LED and will also be powered by completely renewable energy, which has never been done before with the Sundance Square tree.

LED lights, when compared to regular incandescent lights, save a lot more energy and allow more control over color and brightness. To save energy, Sundance Square converted to LED lights many years ago, for the Christmas tree as well as surrounding buildings. The trees partially used LED lights, but this year, the tree will use LEDs entirely.

Also, rooting from an eight-year partnership with Sundance Square, Green Mountain Energy has made it possible for the tree to be powered by 100 percent renewable resources. This, combined with the 42 buildings already powered by 50 percent renewable resources, helps Fort Worth take steps to a greener future.

Sundance Square’s beloved, towering Christmas tree kicks off the holiday season in Fort Worth every year, and the tree’s thousands of lights help Sundance Square shine bright at night. If you want to see the tree in all its energy-saving glory, the annual Christmas tree lighting will take place Saturday at 6 p.m., featuring holiday carols, toy soldier stilt walkers, cast members from The Nutcracker, the official tree lighting countdown and more.
