Cybill Shepherd to receive 1st Bill Paxton award at LSFF

The Lone Star Film Festival announced this week that Cybill Shepherd will be the first recipient of the Bill Paxton Achievement in Film Award for Acting.

The award, which will be presented Nov. 8 at the Lone Star Film Festival Ball at Bass Hall, is named for the Fort Worth-born-and-raised actor who died in February at age 61. Paxton was a founding member of the Lone Star Film Society and a supporter of the festival from its beginning.

“I’m so humbled and flattered to receive this inaugural award, which is all the more special for being named after Bill, of whom I was a huge fan and admirer,” Shepherd said in a statement.

Shepherd will also be present at the world premiere of her latest film, “Rose,” Nov. 9 at Four Day Weekend Theater in Sundance Square. Shepherd plays the title title character, a widowed ex-cop who discovers that she may have a life-threatening illness, and takes a motorized-wheelchair journey through the Southwest, where she meets and falls in love with an old cowboy (James Brolin).

The movie also features Pam Grier and Fort Worth’s Julio Cedillo (“Sicario,” “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”).

Shepherd made her movie debut in one of the best Texas-set movies, “The Last Picture Show,” in 1971. She also starred in its 1990 sequel, “Texasville.” Other major film credits include “Taxi Driver” and the original “Heartbreak Kid.”

Shepherd has also won three Golden Globe Awards, all for television work: Two for her 1985-’89 comedy-drama “Moonlighting” and one for the 1995-’98 sitcom “Cybill.”

The festival previously announced that it would honor Paxton with a special tribute during the ball, which kicks off the Nov. 8-12 fest that takes place at various venues in Fort Worth.

The festival will have screenings and events at AMC Palace Theater, Four Day Weekend Theater, Sundance Square, Sundance Square Pavilion, Bass Performance Hall and The Worthington Renaissance Fort Worth Hotel.
