Decades of persistent community efforts are finally bearing fruit as the ambitious development of Panther Island in Fort Worth inches closer to reality.
Envisioned as a sprawling mixed-use district, with investments exceeding $1.1 billion, the area could be positioned to attract corporations, elevating Fort Worth’s economic landscape. Guiding the development is consulting firm HR&A Advisors, which came up with a vision for a first phase of development, the Dallas Business Journal reported.
The initiative seeks to breathe life into Panther Island, a 500-acre expanse of public and private land in the city’s heart. Development here would connect downtown Fort Worth to its neighboring districts.
The project’s inception dates back to the mid-20th century when devastating floods prompted vital infrastructure improvements along the Trinity.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently secured $403 million to aid flood control, opening up Panther Island to development. This overlooked and polluted industrial stretch could be transformed into a vibrant residential hub with ample green spaces.
HR&A Advisors’ comprehensive vision focuses on mixed-use development and the establishment of a lively entertainment district. It advocates density and a diversity of building types, appealing to pedestrians and office commuters alike.
Panther Island’s transformation hinges on substantial infrastructure improvements, for which funding remains uncertain. As the fall approaches, HR&A Advisors and community stakeholders are gearing up to refresh the strategic vision.
