Call for artists: Third Street underpass mural project

Downtown Fort Worth Inc. (DFWI) invites artists and artist teams to submit qualifications for a mural to beautify the Third Street underpass.

The underpass is at 767 E Third Street on the east side of downtown between Sundance Square and the Hillside Apartments. It provides a gateway into and out of downtown Fort Worth.

DFWI is seeking qualified artists who can provide a site-specific mural that will transform the underpass into a welcoming gateway.

The concrete bridge walls are owned by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. The site includes vertical lines of brown rustlike sediment that run from the top to the bottom of the underpass, caused by water dripping through the train tracks. This condition must be considered and/or integrated with the artwork.

The objective is to have artwork seen from all directions and that the walls are thematically tied, providing an attractive and engaging gateway into and out of downtown. The artwork can encompass all four walls and entrances (totaling approximately 2,900 square feet) or selected areas.

Entry deadline is May 10. The total project budget is $37,000.
